American Footprints
We have been busy learning about famous Americans who have left lasing footprints on our lives. A few weeks ago, we learned about the famous inventor, Eli Whitney and his Cotton Gin. The students were able to experience what it was like to pick and clean cotton straight from the field without the aid of the Cotton Gin.
Last week, we studied Benjamin Franklin and his inveniton of the Franklin Stove. This led us into heat energy and the transfer of heat. We demonstrated the three types of heat energy, conduction, convection and radiation by making popcorn. We used Jiffy Pop and a burner to represent conduction, an air popper to represent convection, and the microwave to represent radiation.

Endangered Species Zoo
Our little zoo keepers did an amazing job with their Endangered Species Zoo. Each group researched an endangered species and created an informational brochure, realistic habitat and trading cards. Students' research included description of the animal, habitat, diet, threats and conservation efforts. Click below to take a peek into the Endangered Zoo!
Mr. Smith Visits 3rd Grade
Our 3rd graders welcomed Mr. Smith, an environmental consultant (and RNE parent). Mr. Smith works closely with endangered species and companies all over Georgia to help protect endangered species and their habitats. The students learned about several species of endangered mussels and were able to touch and examine the mussel shells up close. Later they learned about the endangered Gopher Tortoise of Georgia and Mr. David's "Gopher Tortoise Tunnel Camera".
What a great way to apply what they are learning to a real world experience and career!
